Prayers for Bobby

Bobby Griffith, at the age of 15, realized that he was gay and in conflict with his religious upbringing. Through Bobby's journal entries and his mother's reminiscences we learn of the emotional torment that led to his actions.

That is a summary of the book, and I believe it would be an educational movie for us to watch. thoughts?

Hi everybody

I (in addition to the other members) will be updating ERA's blog from now on. I am writing this under a pen name for clear reasons. If there is an Amanda Benson, I apologize. I will be blogging as well as stating the events.

Another Year of ERA!

The new school year is about to begin, and Our ERA is getting ready! The first change is a name change. Our ERA will now simply be known as ERA, as it's far more to the point!
Some upcoming events will include:
- An awesome booth at Clubs Day!
-The White Ribbon Campaign (Students Against Violence Against Women)
-V-Day
-Events for Pride Day
Keep an ear out in September for the date of our first meeting. We're already planning how to better build on the work we did last year, so this year will be 10 times better!

White Ribbon Success

Just wanted to send out a big thank you to everyone who participated in the White Ribbon Campaign (Students against violence against Women)! The event was a big success :)

Also, Shauna and I (Becky) saw a wonderful movie recently: Gus Van Sant's Milk. The film shows the life and death of Harvey Milk, America's first openly gay politician. Milk was a supervisor in San Francisco when he was murdered by his colleague Dan White. But Milk's message of hope lives on. It's incredibly inspiring, and is extremely topical.

White Ribbon Crusade

The White Ribbon Crusade will be taking place in the Rotunda at lunch on December 5th! Come and show your support, and speak out against violence against women! Wear a white ribbon, and sign our poster, pledging that you will never be violent against your partner.

First meeting and Club Days debrief

It's first ever Our ERA meeting this Friday! Come to Room 391 (Schock's room) at Noon to be a part of the experience. Bring your friends, Our ERA is for everyone!

Club days was an awesome success, we merged with the Alliance Club to form an even stronger group for change. And thanks to everyone who came by to say hi and signed up! If you didn't get the chance, no worries, you'll be able to at the meeting as well.
See you there :)

Good read

Recently the Edmonton Journal ran an excellent article on the need for Gay-Straight Alliances in our city's high school. Give it a look!
